Project Description

People with a serious and incurable illness have to make a decision about their preferred place of death. Most people wish to spend their last days and hours at home. However, the reality demonstrates that this is not always possible. The project "Dying at Home" with its multi-perspective approach is being conducted to explore which factors make dying at home possible.

Methods

A mixed-methods study

  • Individual interviews with patients and their informal caregivers, bereaved relatives as well as stakeholders involved in care of the dying to assess factors that facilitate dying at home. The results of the survey will be consolidated into a needs assessment tool.
  • Quantitative survey with a tool for assessing the needs of incurable and seriously ill patients and their families for a retrospective needs analysis and derivation of implications for care practice.
